ALTERACIONES GRAFÉMICAS Y REPRESENTACIÓN FONOLÓGICA EN UNA COLECCIÓN DE CANTOS POPULARES ESPAÑOLES

Abstract

Graphemic alterations and phonemic representation in a Spanish folk songs collection. This paper analyses some features of non-standard written forms which can be found in Coplas y cantes flamencos, a Spanish folk songs collection by Ruperto Chávarri y Batres. The collection exists in only one handwritten copy, and it has been composed between the 1880s and the 1910s, but the author’s identity and linguistic profile need to be studied in further researches. What is investigated is the underlying phonological representation which motivates such spellings and constitutes the link between oral and transcribed forms. More specifically, this paper analyses, through a qualitative and a quantitative search, the use of <s> to transcribe seseo, as well as the non-normative alternation in the pairs <b>/<v>, <c>/<z> and <g>/<j>. These written forms show a compound phonemic representation, where elements issued from different dimensions of Spanish language (general, “Atlantic”, Andalusian and possibly northern Spanish) are assembled and transcribed through voluntary distorted spellings. It is important to consider this kind of texts as a part of the larger ensemble of folk songs collections composed by the Spanish folklorists between the end of the 19^th and the beginning of the 20^th century, with the need of empiricism and methodological precision that emanated from the scientific and epistemological revolutions of the 19^th century. This kind of transcriptions are the result of the interaction between the author’s competence and underlying representations, and the norm; they play an important role in creating and maintaining the linguistic stereotypes about the southern peninsular varieties of Spanish language.

REZUMAT. Schimbări grafemice și reprezentări fonemice într-o culegere de cântece populare spaniole. Această lucrare analizează câteva caracteristici ale grafiilor non-standard ce pot fi găsite în Coplas y cantes flamencos, o culegere de cântece populare spaniole de Ruperto Chávarri y Batres. Culegerea există doar în formă tipărită și a fost creată între anii 1880 și 1910, dar identitatea și profilul lingvistic al autorului mai trebuie studiate în cercetări viitoare. Examinăm reprezentările fonologice care motivează grafiile și care constituie legătura dintre forma orală și cea transcrisă. Mai precis, această lucrare analizează, printr-o cercetare de tip calitativ și calitativ, întrebuințarea lui <s> pentru a transcrie fenomenul seseo, precum și alternanța non-normativă în perechile <b>/<v>, <c>/<z> și <g>/<j>. Aceste grafii arată o reprezentare fonemică complexă, în care elemente ce provin din diferite varietăți ale limbii spaniole (generală, „atlantică”, anadalusă și, posibil, din nordul Spaniei) sunt combinate și transcrise în forme voit greșite. E important să analizăm acest tip de texte în contextul mai larg al culegerilor de cântece populare create de către folcloriștii spanioli de la sfârșitul secolulul al XIX-lea și de la începutul secolului XX, precum și a nevoii de empiricism și de precizie metodologică ce a izvorât din revoluția științifică și epistemologică ale secolului al XIX-lea. Acest tip de transcrieri sunt rezultatul interacțiunii dintre competența autorului, reprezentările implicite și norma lingvistică. Toate acestea au un rol important în crearea și menținerea stereotipurilor lingvistice despre varietățile limbii spaniole din sudul peninsulei iberice.
