Abstract

Arthrospira is a cyanobacterium with high nutrient values that is mono cultured on a commercial scale. A new empirical growth medium was formulated by incorporating selected nutrients of the standard Zarrouk’s medium in natural brackish water. Growth of Arthrospira in this medium was observed on the basis of protein and pigment contents and microscopic examination. Results sustain the use of this nutrient medium as cost effective method for economically important cyanobacterium cultivation, furthermore possible contamination risks were identified.
